Passion vs Reality

I always thought doing what I love would be fun and easier than doing something out of necessity. Ignorant? Maybe. But I’ve learned that doing what you love isn’t easy, it’s often just as demanding. The idea of passion being effortless is unrealistic.

What I love about stepping into different fields and getting my hands dirty is seeing the reality behind the scenes. When you watch singers, teachers, doctors, designers, influencers say, “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life,” and you see their soft-life reels, on TV and interviews, you really think: This is it. Life isn’t meant to be hard. From the outside, passion looks effortless.

Take writing, for example. Growing up, in conversation it was a hobby. I imagined expressing ideas, connecting with readers, growing creatively, and writing books someday. I never imagined writer’s block, deadlines, long editing hours, and constant self-doubt.

Or entrepreneurship. You imagine freedom, money, and being your own boss. In reality, it’s repeated failures, people management, financial risk, stressful decisions, and working longer hours than your employees.

The truth is, the pressure, rejection, and responsibility can be so overwhelming that you start losing the love for what you do. You might jump from one thing to another, searching for comfort and ease to confirm your purpose. I’ve learned that passion doesn’t remove difficulty – it gives endurance.

Even the things you love can feel tiring, frustrating, and gloomy. But you still have to show up until the work is finished, the people are helped, the confused understand, the sick are healed, and the knowledge you share impacts your community.

Social media and TV make success look overnight and natural, but behind the scenes are years of learning, unseen tears, unstable income, and emotional burnout.

Doing what you love tests your discipline, patience, and resilience. Passion keeps you in the process but it doesn’t make the process easy.

Note to self: Work through the waves.

True that, when you hear people on social media sharing their success you think you can just work up tommorw and become like them yet it’s just alot that you need to combine together before you really get there 👏

We see the finished product and not the process in real time.
